The Giving Tree: Coleen and James
By those they loved, Coleen and James were described as soul mates. Coleen and James were planning their wedding in a gorgeous Aspen Grove The setting was just like them; very natural, very subtle, very grounded and simply beautiful. As I got to know them I learned quickly that they were absolutely connected and also to the earth, and they were inspired in love by the classic children's book The Giving Tree.
In speaking with loved ones, I learned that the footprint they left on the earth was something that was very important to them. I reread The Giving Tree many times as I wrote and realized how much the symbolic elements of the text had in common with this couple. They cared deeply about the world around them, they knew that caring and giving to one another helps individuals feel sustained, and they wanted to live by this throughout their lives. It was an inspiring connection to write about!
Uniquely them, they planted a sapling to unite them together. Symbolically this was a reminder of the importance to nourish each other in marriage with words of encouragement, trust and love. In front of their loved ones they watered the sapling. Just like the tree, marriages need that nourishment to grow into it's full potential.
Their guests may remember the gorgeous day, the bright colors against the natural aspen grove, they may or may not remember the tree planting ceremony, but they certainly will remember how personal and natural this day was. Uniquely Coleen and James. And, for personal reasons as we planted that sapling, I implanted a special memory because as you may see in the photos for this wedding, I was pregnant with my son (my own little sapling!).
I am honored to have been part of this beautiful union.

Let it stand tall during the harsh winds and rains and storms, and come through unscathed. Like a tree, your marriage must be resilient. It must weather the challenges of daily life and the passage of time. And just like the tree you are planting, marriage requires constant nurturing and nourishment.
